A new Commission study showed how, as foreseen in the ongoing legislative revision related to the welfare of animals during transport, digital tools can simplify and optimise the work of operators and competent authorities when implementing and enforcing EU animal transport rules. EASVO contributed expertise to the interviews and is pleased to see the recommendation being brought forward, as the study explored the technical operationalisation of practical solutions such as:
- digital journey logs emitted via TRACES
- geolocation tools for better monitoring of journeys
- mobile applications for operators and authorities
- more automated and harmonised compliance checks
These tools, which the Commission would deploy after the completion of the legislative revision, have important potential to improve animal welfare during transport, reduce administrative burdens for operators and authorities and support more consistent enforcement across the EU.
