The EASVO Young Network held its latest online meeting on 24 October 2025, bringing together young veterinarians from across Europe to exchange updates on policy and field issues affecting the profession.
Members discussed ongoing work on a feedback document for the European Commission addressing the illegal pet trade, including challenges with legislation, microchip and passport verification, and practitioner awareness.
The group was invited to contribute to the EASVO General Assembly on 13 November, where Gaia Autorino (Italy) will present an overview of the Network’s recent activities.
Discussions also covered:
-
Climate change and veterinary work, including early signs of shifting bird migration patterns and tick-borne disease risks.
-
Invasive species, particularly Asian hornets, and the need for coordinated responses involving veterinary, environmental, and public health authorities.
-
Export certification and avian influenza, clarifying when certificates can be issued in the presence of disease in wild birds.
-
Emerging zoonoses, notably Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, with a presentation on vector-borne diseases to be shared with members.
-
Emergency slaughter legislation, where proposed EU changes prompted an exchange of national perspectives on veterinary workload, welfare, and possible loopholes. The welfare of slaughtering pregnant animals was raised as a future topic.
The next Young Network meeting is scheduled for 28 November 2025.
