After Hungary notified the confirmation of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in a dairy cattle holding last week, the Commission adopted Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/496 concerning interim emergency measures on Monday March 11th. These measures shall continuously be adapted, as necessary, to take account of the evolving epidemiological situation. On 12 March 2025 the Commission held an extraordinary meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed where the situation and the measures were reviewed and unanimously supported by Member States. A chronology of the main events and actions taken by the Commission has been prepared and is updated on a regular basis.
On the other hand, the World Organisation for Animal Health announced that Germany regained its FMD Freedom of Disease Status without vaccination – apart from the small containment zone, in which epidemic control measures will continue to apply to this area until at least April 11th. The recognition of the “Containment Zone” by the WOAH and thus the rapid reinstatement of the WOAH freedom status was made possible by the preparation of a comprehensive dossier by the ministry. This was preceded by two weeks of extensive cooperation with the affected federal states of Brandenburg and Berlin together with the NRL and EURL. Read more HERE
