Launched in January 2024, the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture is a new forum designed to shape a shared vision for the future of farming in the European Union. The final report on the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture was released on September 4th.

Earlier this year, FVE took the opportunity to contribute by sharing our perspectives, ambitions, concerns, and solutions, with the goal of finding common ground for the Union’s agri-food sector.

The final report highlights veterinarians as key stakeholders in multiple areas, such as:

  • In the context of animal welfare legislation, working alongside breeders, farmers, and medicine providers to ensure the well-being of animals.
  • In upholding the One Health approach, stressing that animal health is closely linked to animal welfare, and thus veterinarians are integral to managing challenges like AMR.
  • In the broader ecosystem of food production and animal farming, helping balance animal health and welfare while supporting the sustainable transition of EU agriculture. Their expertise is vital in adhering to regulatory frameworks and promoting best practices.
  • In the involvement of the design and monitoring of animal welfare labelling. By defining welfare indicators from the animal’s perspective, they help ensure that welfare criteria are scientifically sound and consistently applied across various farming practices
