The New Yorker, a highly influential magazine, picked up this month a topic close to our hearts, namely the veterinary contribution to pandemic preparedness! Their article highlights through examples like West Nile Fever and HPAI how animal health and human health and environmental health all impact each other. Unfortunately, on a policy level this is not always recognised, as demonstrated by the currently negotiated WHO pandemic treaty. The FVE VPH/Sustainability Working Group, including EASVO Representative Ulrike Winter, worked hard in the last months on the draft FVE Position Paper outlining the ongoing contribution of the veterinary profession to the prevention and control of animal and zoonotic diseases and drawing recommendations for decision-makers on the recognition of veterinary expertise on One Health and pandemic preparedness for the future.
